Man sentenced after motorbike crash kills father

A 20-year-old man from Brechin has avoided a prison sentence after being found responsible for a motorbike crash that killed his father in 2009, reports the BBC.

The accident happened after both father and son had been drinking at a family barbecue. Ian Brand went to an area of forest to ride his bike, and his father rode on the back. He lost control of the motorbike, and his father was killed in the resulting crash.

The son was found to be double the drink driving limit, but the judge at the High Court in Glasgow ruled that this was an “exceptional” case, and he did not want to add to the grief of the family by imposing a custodial sentence. He was instead sentenced to two years probation, and disqualified from driving for five years.
