Data released by the DVLA has revealed that 204 people in the Lothians have received life-long driving bans, reports the Scotsman.
Twenty-two drivers have received at least five life-time bans each, and one persistent offender has been given a total of 15 life-long bans from the courts. In total the 204 offenders have, between them, received 481 life bans.
Over 130 of these bans were for drink driving, and around 50 were given for driving without insurance. A further 18 life bans were for dangerous driving.
Speaking to the Scotsman, Superintendent Alan Duncan, head of Lothian and Borders Police's road policing unit, said:
"If a motorist is found to be driving while disqualified, they may face a prison sentence and officers can have their vehicle removed from the roadway under the vehicle recovery scheme."
