Edinburgh Postcode Most Likely For Burglaries

An Edinburgh postcode has topped an unfortunate list, as it was named the most likely place to be burgled in Scotland.

The EH14 postcode, covering Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green,  was the most likely area in Scotland for residents to be the victim of a burglary with 32 burglaries for 1000 insurance quotes.

Major Cities Most Likely For Burglaries

Glasgow’s Anniesland, Knightswood and Yoker came in second to the Edinburgh postcode, with Newton Mearns being the third most likely area in Scotland for robberies. Indeed all of Scotland’s top ten areas for burglaries

The results came from analysis from insurance claims made in Scotland by moneysupermarket.com which looked at the over 2.7 million insurance claims made in the country in the last 12 months.

Kevin Pratt of Moneysupermarket said: “Edinburgh postcodes dominate the top burglary claim hotspots in Scotland, with other high claim areas around Glasgow’s suburbs.

“Clearly, thieves target urban areas where there’s lots of activity to mask what they’re up to – but they also favour quiet areas where they can operate with less chance of being caught in the act.

“In short, they’ll go pretty much anywhere they think they can carry out their crime and get away with it, which means everyone needs to be conscious of the threat and make their home as safe and secure as possible.”

Although areas around cities were much more likely to see a higher number of burglaries, areas such as Dundee had some of the lowest insurance claims. Dundee’s DD2, and areas of Dumfris had the lowest proportion of burglary claims in the UK with a rate of zero per 1000.

Know A Victim

Analysis from the survey found that those living in a more “at risk” area will pay up to 7% more for insurance cover.

Furthermore a subsequent study found that at least 15% of all Scots have been burgled in the last five years, or know someone who has been a victim of theft.

England Worse for Burglaries

Despite the two major cities in Scotland making up the top ten, none of the major hotspots would have made the UK list, with Dagenham and other areas around London averaging a much higher amount of insurance claims regarding burglaries and theft.

Mark Castle, chief executive of the charity Victim Support, said: "As a charity that supports thousands of burglary victims each year, we know how devastating an impact this crime can have and we are here to help.

"Victims tell us that they suffer far more than material loss when their home is burgled - the psychological impact of this crime can be drastic, long-lasting and different for everyone."
